Soil Fertility Programs Compared - for 18 years, TSM Services, Inc has been researching six (6) different soil fertility programs in replicated (some up to 10 times) plots to make sure that we offer you the very best soil fertility programs possible. The six (6) different soil fertility programs are:

1.  TSM® A - is a "TOTAL SOIL MANAGEMENT® program especially designed to achieve fertility balance as quickly as possible. This recommendation will call for an additional amount of fertilizer to be applied (approx $35 per acre more than TSM® E) until fertility balance is achieved and then after that only maintenance fertilizer will be recommended. While in maintence, if any nutrient falls out of balance, this program will automatically kick in to bring it back. The 18 year average is CORN = 196 bushels per acre and SOYBEANS = 67 bushels per acre. This is not the highest yielding program since we add additional fertilizer to speed up build-up, we lose some balance.

2.  TSM® E - is a "TOTAL SOIL MANAGEMENT® program especially designed to give you "MEY" "Maximun Economic Yield" set up by the universities. Everything in this program is designed for "balance". This program has the "highest potential yield" capability of all 5 programs. This program has the highest "profitability potential" of all 5 programs. This program will automatically alert you to any nutrient that is out of balance and kick in "fertility alert" which automatically adds additional product to the recommendation to bring this nutrient back to balance. The 18 year average is CORN = 200 bushels per acre and SOYBEANS = 70 bushels per acre.

3.  TSM® I - is a "TOTAL SOIL MANAGEMENT® program especially designed for a "lower input cost" program (approx $35 less per acre than TSM® E). Perfect for farmland where yield is limited by some other factor than soil fertility. This program uses less fertilier but maximizes its effeciency to get the highest yield possible. There are some years where a person needs to spend less for a few years to get caught up and then convert back to TSM® E.  The 18 year average is CORN = 191 bushels per acre and SOYBEANS = 66 bushels per acre. This not a bad program for special problems or lower yield optentials.

4.  Tri-State Soil Fertility Program - The three states going together to form this program are (1) Purdue, (2) Ohio State and (3) Michigan State. The 18 year average is CORN = 196 bushels per acre and SOYBEANS = 67 bushels per acre. I must confess that we did a couple of practices not recommended which we feel increased their aversge yields. (1) Instead of soil testing every 5 years, we tested every year and made a fresh recommendation each year (huge benefit) and (2) we used pelletized lime which is granulated powdered lime which they do not recommend. Another huge benefit.

5. University of Illinois Soil Fertility Program - straight out of the "Agronomy Handbook".  The 18 year average is CORN = 192bushels per acre and SOYBEANS = 65 bushels per acre.
